Ingredients

Filling

  • 6 cups apples peeled and sliced about 6 medium
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar or granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Topping

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter cut in cubes
  • Pinch of salt

To Serve

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Whipped cream

Instructions

Prep

  1. Heat oven to 350 F and grease an 8 inch or 9 inch square dish
  2. Peel core and slice the apples into thin pieces and place in a bowl
  3. Add lemon juice vanilla sugar flour and cinnamon and toss until the slices look coated

Make the topping

  1. In a bowl mix brown sugar flour oats cinnamon and salt
  2. Cut in the cold butter with your fingers or a pastry cutter until the mix looks like coarse crumbs with pea size bits

Bake

  1. Spread the apples in the dish and scatter the crumb mix on top in an even layer
  2. Bake 40 to 45 minutes until the top is golden and the juices bubble at the edges
  3. Cool 10 minutes so the syrup thickens then serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream

No oats option

  1. Replace the oats with the same amount of flour and add 1/4 cup chopped nuts for crunch if you like
